Quirky & probably not everyone's taste
The communal areas are like an old DDR Museum and a free blick into the areas Cold War past. Others have mentioned the owner's attitude and the cigarette / cigar smell. The patriarch ( Grandad) is indeed an acquired taste, but we didn't find him offensive, the rest of the family are fine, but struggle with English; so I can understand that if you have no German (or Russian) Comms won't be easy.
And yes, smoking is allowed in the communal areas; which if you can't accept then avoid.

A Word Of Warning…
The small communal kitchen area outside our room smelled strongly of cigarettes, which found it’s way into our room - fine if you are a smoker (we are not).
The pillows and bedding are very thin, however to be fair we did sleep ok.
Although there is limited choice of accommodation in Colditz town, I am sure there are better but more expensive options;
I suppose as always, you get what you pay for.

Very friendly and welcoming hotel.
The rooms were large and tidy, our floor had it's own kitchen and seating area.
We decided to eat and drink on site rather than walk in to Colditz since we would do that in the morning, Andreas provided schnitzel chips and veg along with a selection of beers, all at an extremely agreeable price.
Andreas spoke little English so we were fortunate to have a German speaker in our group, he was quite happy to talk about his time as a border guard and chat about our touring.
All in all a very friendly place at a very good price, don't let the brightly painted exterior put you off, this place has character.

Avoid like the plague
Breakfast wasn't that bad.
It's downhill from then. When we arrived it was like we were in a scene from the Dear Hunter, it was a 'you not be from around here!' movement. The owner was rude and seem to want to pick on a single member of our party in particular.
The rooms were spacious with its own bathroom but felt like it hadn't been upgraded since the fall of the wall. Bed was way too soft and the pillow so thin that they might have just as well just been the pillowcase. Bedclothes also were thin and in need of replacement. The establishment is cluttered with a wide array of weird objects on display.
We had a drink in the bar, in the evening, again with a member of our party being picked on. Which continued when they decided to return to their room.
Overall it reminded me of an East German Fawlty Towers but not so classy and not funny.
There are a few good hotels in Coltidz, this isn't one of them. Stay there or better star in the excellent Youth Hostel in the Castle, which is where we ended up.
